"Yes, please leave and then come back in."
I did, and as I walked back in they both exclaimed a hearty "Aloha!"
We all had a bit of a chuckle about it all, but it led to more conversation, and they brought me some complimentary fresh fruit to go with my breakfast. They made my day, and I suspect I made theirs too.
Sure enough, a week later, I returned after having spent some time on the other side of the Island. I walked in and was immediately greeted with a heartfelt "Aloha!"
It turns out that even thought they had grown up in Hawaii, they had never come to appreciate the true meaning of Aloha until a guy from Victoria walked in and created some ripples. They share their space with a pizza-maker as well, and even though I never met him, evidently they told him the story too and now he corrects everyone that says hello and insists on using Aloha.
So go ahead and dip your toe into unknown territory once in a while. You just never know where the ripples will extend to.
